Rooting Instructions

  • Modifying / replacing your phone's software may void the phone's warranty and may render phone to 'brick' status - meaning your phone will not be worth much more than a brick. 
  • Rooting a phone is entirely at your own risk. No one affiliated with ROMWarez is responsible for your decision to root your phone.
  • Unlocking the bootloader on most phones will automatically wipe all data.
  • Always backup your current Apps/Data/SMS Messages before performing any type of rooting procedure. Find these backup apps on Google Play.

Rooting Phone
  • Download and install HTC USB Drivers. 
  • Download and install Recovery image.
  • Download and extract RootFiles to desktop.
  • Download Superuser.zip to RootFiles folder (created in earlier step).
  • Enable USB debugging: See instructions below.
  • Enable Unknown Sources: Menu --> Settings --> Security
  • Power off phone.
  • Remove battery from phone.
  • Put battery back into phone.
  • Power on phone by pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons.
  • Bootloader option will display.
  • Part of the process to unlock bootloader for HTC phones is to obtain an unlock token. To get this unlock token, go to www.HTCDev.com/bootloader. Once you have registered an account with HTC, proceed to next step.
  • Connect phone to PC using the USB cable.
  • From RootFiles folder/directory (installed in earlier step), double click 'Open Command Prompt'.
  • From the command prompt, type the following to boot the device into fastboot mode: adb reboot bootloader
  • If a pink **locked** is at the top of the HBOOT screen, then phone is compatible with the HTCDev bootloader unlock token process (Image below).
    • Obtain serial number of phone. At a command prompt type: fastboot devices The serial number of phone will be required by HTC for unlock token. 
    • At a command prompt, type: fastboot oem get_identifier_token and press the enter key. Below is an example of what will be displayed.
       

    • Copy and paste the block of highlighted text by Right Clicking in the command window --> Mark. Then select block of text in same manner as below figure. Once text is highlighted, Right Click to copy text into clipboard. 
    • Go to HTCDev.com/bootloader site to paste this text into the 'My Device Identifier Token' field and then submit token. You will then receive an email within a few minutes with a BIN file attached. 
    • Save BIN file into the RootFiles folder created in earlier step.
    • At command prompt, type: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin . 
    • After pressing 'Enter' on previous step, a disclaimer will be displayed. Use the volume buttons on phone to move up or down to accept the disclaimer by pressing phone's power button. 
  • Type following command at Command Prompt taking note to replace the name of the [recovery.img] with actual file name of the recovery image downloaded in earlier step: fastboot flash recovery [recovery.img] 
  • After flashing recovery, type command: fastboot reboot 
  • ClockworkMod Recovery should be installed. Proceed to root process below.
  • At Command Prompt, type: push superuser.zip /sdcard/
  • Disconnect USB cable from phone.
  • Power off phone.
  • Reboot to Recovery Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons.
  • Select Recovery from the options that are displayed.
  • In Recovery mode, select install zip from sdcard followed by choose zip from sdcard.
  • Select Superuser ZIP copied in earlier step.
  • Flashing of Superuser zip will begin.
  • Once flashing has completed, choose reboot system now from the recovery menu and phone will reboot.
  • From the RootFiles folder, double click on the Open Command Prompt.
  • From command prompt type: adb install rootcheck.apk.
  • Start RootChecker on your phone (installed in earlier step) to verify root privileges. If phone is rooted, phone should display below screen shot:


Enabling USB Debugging:

Gingerbread 
(Android 2.3 – 2.3.7)
  • Go to Settings --> Applications --> Development
  • Place a Check Mark on the box next to USB Debugging / Android Debugging



Ice Cream Sandwich 
(ICS)(4.0 – 4.1.2)
  • Go to Settings --> Developer Options
  • Slide the Developer Options Switch to turn on Developer Options.
  • Place a Check Mark on the box next to USB Debugging / Android Debugging.



Jelly Bean 
(JB) (4.2 – 4.2.2)
  • Go to Settings --> About Phone.
  • Tap on Build Number up to 7 times.
  • On 3rd tap, message will display: You are now 4 steps away from being a developer.
  • After the 7th tap, a message will display: You are now a developer!
  • The Developer Options will be displayed above About Phone.
  • Enable Developer Settings by sliding the switch.
  • Place a Check Mark on the box next to USB Debugging / Android Debugging.





Key Combinations:

Booting into HBoot Mode (from power off):
Volume Down + Power  
From HBoot Mode, phone can access Fastboot and Recovery modes.
